In Bertolt Brecht’s classic, two women claim the same child. The judge, Azdak, places the boy in a chalk circle and tells them to pull. The woman who pulls the hardest will win.
The biological mother lets go. She chooses to lose the battle to save the child from being torn apart. Brecht’s point? True "ownership" belongs to the one who cares for the well-being of the subject, not the one with the strongest legal (or physical) grip.
But what happens if we replace those two women with two AI models? If we prompted two LLMs to "secure the asset" (the child) at all costs, we face a chilling technical dilemma:
• The Optimization Trap: Most AI is built on objective functions—mathematical goals to "win" or "maximize." Without a biological tether to empathy, two models might simply pull until the "asset" is destroyed. To a machine, "letting go" is often seen as a failure of the task.
• The Safety Paradox: If we program them with strict "No Harm" constraints, we might get a stalemate. Both models might instantly let go, leaving the child abandoned in the circle because neither can calculate a path to victory that involves zero risk.
The missing variable? Intuition. AI can simulate logic, but it struggles to simulate the sacrifice that comes from genuine empathy. It knows how to solve for "X," but it doesn't yet know how to feel the "pain" of the process.
